Zamalek have threatened to withdraw from the Egyptian Super Cup after members of their squad were detained by police in Abu Dhabi on Monday.
Mostafa Shalaby and Nabil Emad clashed with security at the Al Nahyan Stadium following the White Knights’ 5-4 shootout win over Pyramids on Sunday.
The two players were summoned to a police station on Monday morning along with sporting director Abdel-Wahed El Sayed, and the trio have yet to be released.
Zamalek are due to face arch-rivals Al Ahly in the Egyptian Super Cup final on Thursday, but the club’s spokesman, Ahmed Salem, revealed they are considering returning to Cairo due to the incident.
“An urgent meeting is now taking place between Hussein Labib, the club’s president, Hossam El Mandouh, the treasurer, and the head of the mission, to discuss not completing the Egyptian Super Cup and returning to Cairo as soon as possible due to the inappropriate atmosphere and unbearable pressure the delegation is exposed to,” Salem said in a statement.
“The head of the board and the head of the delegation have been at the police station since early morning due to the officials’ decision to detain the players.”
Reports in Egypt claim that the country’s Sports Minister, Ashraf Sobhy, is locked in talks with their ambassador in Abu Dhabi to prevent the situation from escalating even further.
