Saturday’s action in the Betway Premiership saw Mamelodi Sundowns open a six-point lead at the top of the log, while Sekhukhune United were the other winners on the day as they rose to fifth place with a narrow victory over Marumo Gallants.
Sundowns secured a sixth successive league win (with six clean sheets in the process) when they defeated Richards Bay 2-0 at the King Zwelithini Stadium in one of two afternoon matches.
The metaphorical Brazilians triumphed thanks to goals from actual Brazilians Arthur Sales and Lucas Ribeiro, with the result taking them six points clear of nearest chasers Orlando Pirates – though the Buccaneers do have two games in hand, the first of which is away to Magesi FC on Sunday.
In the other afternoon clash, Golden Arrows and Polokwane City played out a goalless stalemate at the Mpumalanga Stadium, while the early-evening fixture at a drenched Old Peter Mokaba Stadium saw Sekhukhune United temporarily rise to fourth place on the log with a 1-0 win at home to Marumo Gallants – courtesy of a goal from Keletso Makgalwa.
Babina Noko dropped back to fifth in the wake of the night game at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, in which SuperSport United and Stellenbosch FC played out a 1-1 draw: the Cape visitors drew first blood via Jayden Adams, but Tashreeq Morris struck back for Matsatsantsa.
The Betway Premiership continues on Sunday 29 December with four matches, headlined by struggling heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs hosting Chippa United at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
