Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates both registered wins in the Betway Premiership as the battle for the South African top-flight title heats up.

Sundowns emerged as 2-0 winners over Richards Bay at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday thanks to two goals from Brazilian forwards Arthur Sales and Lucas Ribeiro as the champions opened a six-point lead atop the league standings.

However, the gap was reduced to three points by second-placed Pirates on Sunday as the Soweto giants claimed a 1-0 win over Magesi FC courtesy of Relebohile Mofokeng’s fine strike at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Meanwhile, SuperSport United missed a chance to climb up into the top four after drawing 1-1 with Stellenbosch FC at the Lucas Moripe Stadium where Tashreeq Morris cancelled out Jayden Adams’ opening goal on Saturday.

At the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, Sekhukhune United moved up to the fifth spot in the standings after claiming a 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants courtesy of Keletso Makgalwa’s second-half strike on Saturday.

The last match of the weekend saw Chiefs snap a three-match winless run in the league when they secured a 1-0 win over Chippa United courtesy of Mduduzi Shabalala’s solo goal at the Moses Mabhida Stadium and the Soweto giants climbed up to the seventh spot.
