The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is expected to unveil Benni McCarthy as their senior men’s national team coach in the “coming days”, according to Hussein Mohammed.
FKF president Mohammed did not confirm that McCarthy will be the Harambee Stars’ new coach, but it is widely expected that the former South African international will be handed the reins, having been strongly linked to the role for several months now.
“Very soon in the next coming days, we will make that announcement,” Hussein is quoted by Pulse Sports.
The federation president also told The Nation: “[The] FKF is working to appoint a substantive coach and a competent technical bench to help us achieve our objectives.
“That’s why the current technical bench was appointed on an interim basis. We will provide an update on the new coach once all the details are finalised.”
McCarthy, who made 79 appearances and scored a record 31 goals for Bafana Bafana, has worked as an assistant coach at Sint-Truiden in Belgium before spells with PSL clubs Cape Town City and AmaZulu from 2017 to 2022. He then spent two years at Premier League giants Manchester United as part of Erik ten Hag’s technical team.
Assuming McCarthy is confirmed as Kenya’s coach, his first competitive matches in charge will be next month in CAF’s 2026 World Cup qualification tournament.
The Harambee Stars are scheduled to face Gambia (away) and Gabon (home) in Group F matches. The group is currently topped by Ivory Coast on 10 points, with Kenya in fourth place on five points.
