Orlando Pirates secured a vital 1-0 away victory against MC Alger in the first leg of their CAF Champions League quarter-final clash at the 5 July 1962 Stadium on Tuesday.
Despite facing intense pressure and a laser-wielding home crowd, the Buccaneers snatched a crucial away goal thanks to a composed finish from substitute Mohau Nkota in the 65th minute.
MC Alger dominated possession and created numerous chances, particularly in the first half, but failed to capitalise. Zakaria Naidji came close for the Algerian side in the 29th minute, while Pirates’ Evidence Makgopa was denied a clear opportunity by the referee.
The second half saw a more resilient Pirates side, and coach Jose Riveiro’s introduction of Nkota proved decisive.
The forward calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner after a swift attacking move, giving the South African side a slender advantage heading into the second leg.
Despite being outshot 16-3 by the 70th minute, Pirates held firm to protect their lead, earning a hard-fought victory in a hostile environment. The second leg promises to be a thrilling encounter as MC Alger travel to South Africa looking to overturn the deficit.
