Egypt bounced back in the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday with a spirited 2-1 win over Cameroon to revive their U-17 World Cup hopes after two early defeats in the tournament.

Head coach Ahmed Abdou Abdelaziz described the victory as “a turning point” and gave his players credit for their “patriotic spirit.”

“I thank the players enormously. They showed a true patriotic spirit. They know what it means to play for Egypt, what this jersey represents,” he said after the match.

Egypt’s win secures them a World Cup qualifying play-off spot against the third-place team from Group D on April 12th in El Jadida. Despite the difficult challenge ahead, the team feels prepared.

Burkina Faso beat South Africa 2-0 at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, but Amajimbos advanced to the quarter-finals of the AFCON and booked a place in the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

As for the Young Stallions, they top Group B with nine points, seeing a continuation of their impressive campaign so far.

The hosts Morocco also advanced to the quarter-finals and a World Cup spot, with Abdellah Ouazane’s brace playing a huge role in their 3-0 triumph over Tanzania.

Zambia also got themselves a spot in the last eight after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Uganda saw them finish second in Group A behind leaders Morocco.
