South Africa will have two representatives in the CAF Champions League semi-finals in the coming weeks after Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates recorded narrow quarter-final wins against ES Tunis and MC Alger respectively.
The Brazilians took a 1-0 advantage into their second-leg clash against ES Tunis at Stade Olympique Hammadi Agrebi on Tuesday evening.
With little to separate the two sides in Tunisia, a 0-0 scoreline was enough for Sundowns to book their spot in the tournament’s semi-finals for the sixth time in their history.
Then, reigning CAF Champions League holders Al Ahly recorded a 1-0 win against Al-Hilal in their second-leg quarter-final clash at Stade de la Capitale on Tuesday night. Al Ahly held a slender 1-0 aggregate advantage from their home tie, while Emam Ashour broke Al-Hilal hearts with an 80th minute strike in Mauritania.
Elsewhere, Orlando Pirates joined Sundowns as the second team from the PSL to reach the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League this week.
The Buccaneers’ 1-0 win against Alger in the first leg, which was on away soil, was just about enough for Jose Riveiro and his charges to get over the line as the two sides saw out a 0-0 draw at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday.
