Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso will be keeping his crossed that the injury suffered by Nathan Tella in the 0-0 draw with Union Berlin on Saturday won’t sideline him for too long.

The Nigeria international made his second consecutive start in the Bundesliga since recovering from a muscular problem that had ruled him out for two games last month.

However, Tella lasted just 45 minutes against Die Eisernen after picking up a knock in a heavy collision with visiting goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow 10 minutes before half-time.

The 25-year-old, who has only scored two goals in 22 league appearances for Alonso’s side this season, did not appear for the second half and was replaced by Moroccan winger Amine Adli.

The defending champions trail Bayern Munich by six points in second place with five matches remaining in the campaign and Alonso can ill afford another setback in attack, with Victor Boniface having already missed eight games due to a hamstring injury.

Leverkusen expressed optimism that Tella wasn’t seriously hurt, posting on their official X account: “Hope you’re all good Nathan!” followed by a praying emoji.
