Egypt began their U-20 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with Group A 1-0 win over South Africa at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday evening.

Despite Amajita being the better team in terms of ball possession and shots on target, the Pharaohs took advantage of their first proper chance in the 62nd minute of play to dismantle the visitors.

Elsewhere, in Sunday’s earlier kick-off, Zambia and Sierra Leone played to a goalless draw at the Suez Canal Stadium.

Despite controlling the ball for long periods, the 2017 champions Zambia couldn’t break down a stubborn Sierra Leone defence.

Chipolopolo’s Joseph Sabobo was a constant threat, testing goalkeeper Samba Bah multiple times, but ultimately failed to score.

Egypt are four-time champions at this level, and the hosts are looking to grab a fifth title to add to their wins in 1981, 1991, 2003 and 2013.

Sharing a group with South Africa, Zambia, Sierra Leone and Tanzania, only the two top teams in each group along with the two best third-placed teams will see themselves advancing to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
