Senegal, the reigning champions of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), will open the defence of their title with a Group C match against the Central African Republic on Friday 2 May 2025.
The Young Lions of Teranga won the U-20 AFCON for the first time when they triumphed in Egypt in 2023, and coach Serigne Saliou Dia has been tasked with trying to make it back-to-back titles – starting out with a clash against CAR at the Suez Stadium.
“We will approach it with humility,” said Saliou Dia. “Football evolves quickly: winning today doesn’t guarantee success tomorrow. What matters is to keep our feet on the ground and understand that everything is decided on the field through hard work.
“We have talented players capable of delivering great performances, but we must stay true to our values and show humility. We know we will be expected to win, and many believe Senegal must win again. But we are still hungry for victory, and we want to continue shining, which will require a lot of hard work and sacrifice.”
The second Group C match on Friday pits DR Congo against Ghana at the Suez Stadium.
The Black Satellites are four-time AFCON U-20 champions (most recently in 2021) and coach Desmond Ofei is confident of their chances – especially on the back of the extensive ‘home work’ they have done on their opponents.
“We’ve done extensive scouting. Senegal are the reigning champion for a reason, very well organised and consistent,” said Ofei.
“DR Congo and Central African Republic also bring different tactical profiles. We’ve studied each team closely and will prepare uniquely for every match.”
