Nigeria and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed in a medically induced coma following surgery after sustaining a serious injury against Leicester City on Sunday.
The BBC has reported that Awoniyi suffered a ruptured intestine after colliding with the goalpost while attempting to fetch a cross from teammate Anthony Elanga in the 87th minute of Forest’s 2-2 draw at the City Ground.
Awoniyi was substituted on for Ibrahim Sangare in the 83rd minute and received treatment on the pitch following the collision but attempted to continue playing despite being visibly uncomfortable.
The 27-year-old was admitted to hospital on Monday night and underwent surgery. He is still in hospital but recovering well, according to the BBC.
The Nigerian national has appeared in 27 Premier League games for Nottingham Forest this season and has been with the club since signing from Union Berlin in 2022.
