Gabonese forward Denis Bouanga has sent Los Angeles FC (LAFC) to the FIFA Club World Cup after scoring an extra time winner in their playoff game with Club América at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.
Club América opened the scoring in the 64th minute after a goalless first half, as Brian Rodriguez netted from the penalty spot against his former team.
LA FC forced extra time as they drew level in the 89th minute, with Bouanga delivering a perfect cross to Igor Jesus from a corner which he headed home.
In the 115th minute, Bounga struck the ball first time from the edge of the area, sending it past Club América goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota to hand his side the win.
“We worked hard to win this game,” said Bouanga.
“It was a great match and it was magnificent for us, magnificent for the whole stadium, and now we’re off to Atlanta,” he said.
Bounga made his debut for Gabon in 2017 and has netted five times in six appearances for the nation in World Cup Qualifiers
LAFC will join Chelsea, Flamengo and Espérance Sportive de Tunis in group D at the FIFA Club World Cup, which takes place from 14 June to 13 July.
