Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos is starting to plan for the future after admitting he does not want to rely on Mamelodi Sundowns’ ageing stars for much longer.

The core of Broos’ squad has made up of Masandawana players since he took charge of the national team in 2021, but quite a few of them are now the wrong side of 30.

The Belgian also claims he’s not keen on selecting so many players from one team and is casting his net wider in the search for new blood ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and beyond.

With the Brazilians taking part in the Club World Cup from June 13 to July 14, Broos will try different combinations for the upcoming friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique.

“I know the presence of Sundowns players in the national team has always been important,” he said. “Why? Because those are players who are very experienced at the higher level.

“So they helped us a lot in the past but as you know, I am not a coach who always looks only at the top teams [for player selection]… I always look at other teams as well.

“Some of the Sundowns players are now 30 and older, so we also have to think about the future. We will do it without Sundowns players [against Tanzania and Mozambique].

“Let’s hope we can find some other players too [from other teams] because having too many players from one club is not good; therefore it’s very interesting for me to see other players from other teams in these friendly games.”
