Newly appointed Al Ahly coach Jose Riveiro believes his CAF Champions League campaign with Orlando Pirates led the Egyptian club to acquire his services.

Riveiro and Pirates mutually decided to part ways before the end of the Spaniard’s contract due to him signing with Al Ahly and wanting time with his new team to prepare for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.

“I think the results at Orlando Pirates prompted Al Ahly to pursue me. I followed Al Ahly recently; we were eliminated from the Champions League semi-finals,” said Riveiro, speaking to Al Ahly TV.

“After that, Al Ahly changed their technical team, which is why the negotiations with me were quick,” he said.

“We won titles and went far in the CAF Champions League. I competed against Al Ahly when I was with Orlando, and we played two great matches. The continent learned about my capabilities as a coach during the last edition of the CAF Champions League.”

This past season, Orlando Pirates were knocked out of the Champions League in the semi-final by Egyptian side Pyramids FC after a dramatic second leg in Cairo where Pyramids emerged as 3-2 victors.

Riveiro spent three successful seasons in Soweto, winning three consecutive MTN 8 Cups and back-to-back Nedbank Cups.
