Hosting the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) for the second-straight time, Morocco is a team packed with talent and ability.

The nation has only participated in the tournament on three prior occasions, providing their best performance yet in the previous edition. Morocco fell 2-1 to South Africa in the final, ending a hard-fought campaign in heartbreak.

With the tournament returning to the nation, Morocco’s stars will have to shine bright on the continent’s biggest stage as they have another chance to lift the coveted trophy on home soil.

Players to Watch

Ghizlane Chebbak performed brilliantly at the 2022 WAFCON, scoring three goals and being crowned Best Player at the tournament. She captained her side to the final where they fell to South Africa 2-1 on home soil.

Chebbak plies her trade in Spain’s Liga F at Levante Badalona, where she bagged three goals and two assists in 25 games this past season.

The 34-year-old brings not only experience, but her impressive footballing IQ, vision and set-piece ability.

With the tournament returning to Morocco this year, Chebbak will relish the opportunity to lead her side on home soil again as they aim to tussle for the title once more.

Fatima Tagnaout is another dangerous weapon in the Moroccan arsenal. The left winger has proven her pedigree in the Moroccan league, where she has earned multiple player of the season awards and multiple league titles.

Tagnaout has also proven her talent on the continental stage, representing Morocco at the 2022 WAFCON and winning the CAF Women’s Champions League in 2022 with AS FAR. In the same year, she was named Best Player in the CAF Women’s Champions League and earned a spot in the WAFCON Team of the Tournament.

The face of the rise of women’s football in Morocco, Tagnaout will be out to improve on Morocco’s result from the last WAFCON and bring the trophy home.
