Morocco, known as ‘The Atlas Lionesses’ will be participating in their fourth Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and will be the host team for the 2024 tournament.

Morocco’s best achievement at the WAFCON was finishing as runners-up on home soil in the previous edition in 2022, when they were defeated in the final by South Africa.

The Atlas Lionesses also appeared at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, reaching the round of 16, while they have never qualified for the Olympic Games.

Coached by Spaniard Jorge Vilda, who was appointed in October 2023, Morocco boasts an experienced squad which is a blend of locally-based players and foreign-based stars.

Key performers to watch out for include Saudi Arabian-based forward Ibtissam Jraidi; Spanish-based captain and midfielder Ghizlane Chebbak; defender Hanane Ait El Haj; and veteran goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi.

The Atlas Lionesses have been drawn in Group A for the WAFCON and will face Zambia in the tournament opener on Saturday 5 July; DR Congo on Wednesday 9 July; and Senegal on Saturday 12 July – all at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
