Algeria have their eyes set on the knockout stage of this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The Greens have qualified for five previous WAFCON tournaments, representing their nation on the continental stage in 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018. They are yet to advance past the group stage of the competition, having exited in all previous attempts before the knockout stage.
Head coach Farid Benstiti, who had stints at Olympique Lyonnais and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), is confident that his side have a good chance of reaching the quarterfinals for the first time despite their tough group.
Algeria have been drawn in group B alongside 11 time champions Nigeria, Tunisia and Botswana, who made the quarterfinals at the 2022 WAFCON.
Les Vertes’s midfield will be led by Lina Boussaha, who plays her club football for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Women’s Premier League club after leaving PSG. She has represented her country since 2023 and brings creativity to the middle of the park.
Their defence will be anchored by Marine Dafeur who plies her trade at FC Fleury 91 in France and also joined the national side in 2023.
The team is currently in its second phase of preparation for the tournament, hosting camp at the National Technical Center in Sidi Moussa. The final squad for the tournament has yet to be announced by the Algerian Football Association.
