Senegal, known as the ‘Lionesses’, will be participating in their third Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), having featured in the 2012 and 2022 editions.

The Lionesses’ best achievement at the WAFCON was reaching the quarter-finals in Morocco in the previous edition in 2022, where they lost to the eventual third-place team, Zambia.

Senegal are yet to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Olympic Games, but they have won the WAFU Zone A Women’s Cup twice in 2020 and 2023.

Coached by Mame Moussa Cisse, who led the team to the 2022 WAFCON quarter-finals, the Lionesses have a strong squad that features both foreign-based and local players.

Key performers to watch out for include Maman Diop (Olympique de Marseille, France), Safiétou Sagna (US Saint Malo, France) and Marème Babou (RC Strasbourg, France).

Senegal have been drawn in Group A for the WAFCON and will face DR Congo in their tournament opener on Sunday, 6 July at the El Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia; Zambia on Wednesday, 9 July at the El Bachir Stadium; and hosts Morocco on Saturday, 12 July at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
