Kalidou Koulibaly’s Al-Hilal caused one of the upsets of the 2025 Club World Cup as they battled back from behind to beat Manchester City 4-3 after extra time in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
Simone Inzaghi had made an immediate impact with the Blue Waves following his appointment as head coach on June 4 after his side held Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw in their Group H opener two weeks later.
But the result against the Citizens was even more stunning, having gone behind to Bernardo Silva’s opener after just nine minutes at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando before Marcos Leonardo restored parity in the 46th minute.
Malcom then put them ahead six minutes later, although Erling Haaland (55′) quickly hit back for City to take the game to extra time. Koulibaly (94′) restored Al-Hilal’s lead, only for Phil Foden (104′) to equalise once more before Leonardo clinched a famous victory in the 112th minute.
Then on Monday, Inter Milan were also sent crashing out of the revamped intercontinental continental competition following a 2-0 defeat to Fluminense at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
The Tricolor got off to a dream start when Cano opened the scoring in the third minute and the Nerazzurri failed to recover as Hercules sealed the win in 93rd minute.
The round-of-16 action concludes with an epic encounter between Real Madrid and Juventus at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on Tuesday, while Borussia Dortmund lock horns with Monterrey at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Wednesday.
