After missing out on the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Ghana’s new generation are looking to make history in Morocco and we picked three players who could be key to their maiden title aspirations at the 2024 edition.

Princella Adubea

The 26-year-old forward is one of the longer-serving players in the current squad, but will be making her WAFCON debut after the Black Queens failed to qualify for the tournament three years ago. Adubea scored Ghana’s only goal in the first round of qualifying for the 2022 edition as they beat Nigeria 1-0 in the second leg but lost 2-1 on aggregate. She is the focal point of the attack for Kim Bjorkegren’s side and got her name on the scoresheet in the 7-0 rout of Rwanda in the first leg of the first-round qualifiers on 20 September 2023.

Alice Kusi

The 30-year-old midfielder is a veteran of two WAFCONS, having featured at the 2016 and 2018 editions. Kusi played a starring role for the Black Queens against Rwanda, scoring four goals in the 12-0 aggregate win, including an impressive first-half hat-trick in the second leg. She is expected to provide the creative spark in midfield as Ghana bid to reach the final for the first time since 2006.

Doris Boaduwaa

The 22-year-old striker is one of the newer faces in Bjorkegren’s squad but has already made an impact on the international stage. Boaduwaa was also on target in the 7-0 demolition of the She-Wasps when she opened the scoring after just three minutes and caught the eye in the second-round qualifiers with a match-winning brace as Ghana beat Namibia 3-1 in the first leg and eventually progressed to the WAFCON finals 3-2 on aggregate. Bjorkegren views her as a potential top scorer at the continental showpiece.
