With just over 24 hours to go until the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) kicks off in Morocco on the evening of Saturday 5 July, 2025, we take a closer look at the numbers and statistics which best sum up the tournament.
15 – This will be the 15th edition of the WAFCON. The tournament was first played in 1991 as the African Women’s Championship.
2 – Morocco are hosting the WAFCON for the second consecutive time, and they will make it a hat-trick when they host the 2026 edition, scheduled for March next year.
9 – Nigeria are the most successful team in WAFCON history, winning the tournament a record nine times: 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018. That number stretches to 11 if you include their two triumphs in the pre-tournament format in 1991 and 1995.
3 – Only three teams have won the WAFCON: Nigeria (9), Equatorial Guinea (2: 2008 and 2012), and South Africa (1: 2022).
12 – The 2024 WAFCON features 12 teams, all of which have played in at least one previous edition of the tournament.
2010 – However, of the 12, Tanzania will feel the most like debutants: The Twiga Stars have only one previous WAFCON appearance, and that was back in 2010.
6 – The 2024 WAFCON will played across six different stadiums in five cities: Olympic Stadium in Rabat; Larbi Zaouli Stadium and Pere Jego Stadium, both in Casablanca; El Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia; Honor Stadium in Oujda; and the Berkane Municipal Stadium in Berkane.
35,000 – The Honor Stadium in Oujda has the largest capacity of the venues being used, with 35,000 seats.
46 – The number of officials appointed to the WAFCON: 18 referees, 18 assistant referees and 10 VAR referees.
26 – The number of matches which will be played at the 2024 WAFCON: 18 group stage matches; 4 quarterfinals; 2 semifinals; a third-place playoff; and the final.
2,400,000 – The total prize money fund in US$ for the 2024 WAFCON. The winners will receive US$500,000.
