Hosts Morocco will square off with Zambia in the opening match of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Sunday.
Kick-off is at 9:00 pm CAT.
The Group A match is scheduled to be played at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, the capital city of Morocco and the country’s seventh-largest city.
The Atlas Lionesses thumped Tanzania 4-0 in a friendly match on June 28, as they extended their unbeaten run across all competitions to four matches.
Morocco will pin their hopes of starting the tournament with a win on their inspirational captain Ghizlane Chebbak, who has netted over 20 goals for the Atlas Lionesses.
Meanwhile, Zambia suffered a 2-0 defeat to South Africa in a friendly match on June 3, as they extended their winless run across all competitions to two matches.
The Copper Queens will look to their influential captain, Barbra Banda, who is Africa’s all-time top scorer in Olympic football history, having scored three hat-tricks at two Olympic Games.
The two teams have met five times across all competitions since 2022, but this will be their first-ever meeting in the WAFCON.
Zambia have the upper hand in this rivalry, having won three games compared to Morocco’s one win, while one game ended in a draw.
