Ghana will aim to take one step closer to World Cup qualification as its national team faces the Central African Republic at the Stade d’Honneur in Meknes, Morocco, on Wednesday.
The Central African Republic is second from the bottom in group I, with five points from its eight games. The nation’s only victory of its qualifying campaign came against Chad in June 2024, and was accompanied by two draws and five losses in the country’s eight games.
In their September qualifiers, Les Fauves lost to both Madagascar and the Comoros 2-0 and will be looking to end its campaign with pride and dignity, despite having no chance at qualifying.
After drawing 1-1 with Chad and defeating Mali 1-0 in September, Ghana sits in first place in group I with 19 points from eight matches in its qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars have won six matches and drawn one, with its only loss of the qualifiers coming against the Comoros in a 1-0 defeat in November 2023.
Ghana are three points ahead of next-best Madagascar, and will be looking for a victory on Wednesday. Should this happen, Madagascar will need to win in order to stay in the race. But if Madagascar draws, Ghana will need a win to qualify on Wednesday, or if Madagascar loses, a draw against Les Fauves would be enough.
The first meeting between the two sides in these qualifiers was a dramatic affair, with Ghana emerging as 4-3 winners in Kumasi, Ghana. Hat-tricks were scored on both sides as Jordan Ayew and Louis Mafouta both netted three times.
