South Africa were held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in Kinshasa in the first leg of their second-round qualifying tie on Tuesday, while results elsewhere saw Tanzania and Zambia record victories.

The clash between DRC and Banyana Banyana at the Pentecost Martyrs Stadium saw the visitors claim the lead via Kgalebane Mohlakoana late in the first half, as she swept home a left-footed shot after good set up play from Bonolo Mokoma down the left flank.

However, Banyana’s lead was short lived, with the DRC equalising via Ruth Monique just before the interval.

The second half saw the sides cancel each other out, though South Africa will certainly be the happier of the two, as they head into the return game at FNB Stadium next Tuesday holding an advantage on away goals.

Elsewhere, Tanzania trumped Ethiopia 2-0 at the Azam Complex Stadium in Chamazi thanks to goals from Aisha Mnunka and Jamila Mnunduka, while Zambia got the better of Namibia with a thrilling 4-2 ‘away’ win at the Dobsonville Stadium in Johannesburg.

Copper Queens star Racheal Kundananji scored a hat-trick to add to Racheal Nachula’s strike, while Namibia’s goals were netted by Ivone Kooper and Zenatha Coleman.

The winners of the second-round ties will qualify for the expanded 16-team WAFCON, which will be held in Morocco in March and April next year.
