The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has cut ties with head coach Michael Nees, terminating his contract.
This is according to a statement released by the organisation on Wednesday.
Nees took the reins of the Zimbabwean men’s national team in September 2024 and struggled to achieve results. In 16 matches in charge, the Warriors claimed two victories which both came against Namibia during Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification last year.
Zimbabwe finished last in group C of the African FIFA World Cup qualifiers with five losses and five draws.
“The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) wishes to inform all stakeholders and members of the public that the Executive Committee has resolved to terminate the contract of Mr. Michael Nees with immediate effect,” the statement reads.
“The Association takes this opportunity to sincerely thank Mr. Nees for his efforts and contributions to Zimbabwean football during his tenure. His dedication to the game and his service to the national structures are appreciated.”
While ZIFA did not announce Nees’ replacement to guide the country through its upcoming AFCON campaign, it stated that such information would be communicated in future as the search for the German’s replacement continues.
“ZIFA remains firmly committed to strengthening its technical development programs and ensuring continued progress in all areas of the game in line with its reform and restructuring agenda. Further information regarding the transition process and interim technical arrangements will be communicated in due course.”
