Home teams triumph in Friday CAF Club action

The home teams shone in Friday’s CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup fixtures, with six sides booking their places in the group stages of the competitions.


In the Champions League, Power Dynamos drew 1-1 with Vipers to edge through 3-2 on aggregate after a crucial away win last weekend, while Al-Hilal turned up the heat after a 1-0 win in the first leg against Kenya Police FC, winning 3-1 at home on Friday to march to the next stage.


In the Confederations Cup, Azam punished KMKM 7-0 to advance 9-0 on aggregate. Zamalek eased past Dekeda 1-0 at home after dishing out a 6-0 thinking in the first leg, while CR Belouizdad also took care of business at home, beating Haifa 2-0 after a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their encounter. Wydad also cruised through to the group stage, hammering Asante Kotoko 5-1 on Friday to claim a 6-1 win over the two legged tie.


The second leg fixtures of the second preliminary round of both competitions continue on Saturday with 26 teams vying for spots in the group stages.


Seven fixtures headline Saturday’s champions league action including Orlando Pirates, who will look to overcome a 3-0 deficit as they host Saint-Éloi Lupopo.


Silver Strikers and Black Bulls will look to defend their 1-0 aggregate leads as they travel to face Young Africans and Rivers United respectively.


Heavyweights Petro de Luanda and Al Ahly will look to hold on to their leads after winning away last weekend as they tackle Stade d’Abidjan and Aigle Noir at home. AS FAR have an away goal advantage but will look to put the tie to rest at home against Horoya.


In Saturday’s Confederations Cup action, Jwaneng Galaxy and Zesco United continued their heated battle with Zesco United leading 4-3 on aggregate.


Royal Leopards and Maniema Union, Coton Sport Benin and FC San-Pédro, and Singida Black Stars and Flambeau du Centre are all locked at 1-1 on aggregate in their respective fixtures, with this weekend’s home teams having bagged vital away goals last weekend.


AFAD Plateau travel to face USM Alger with a precious 1-0 lead, while Stade Tunisien will look to overturn at 2-0 deficit at home as they welcome OC Safi.
