The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) has announced the inclusion of three clubs from Sudan in the 2025/26 Rwanda Premier League Championship.
This is according to a statement released by the federation on Friday.
“The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) is pleased to inform the public, stakeholders, and the wider football community that three of Sudan’s most prominent football clubs have officially been granted approval by FERWAFA & Rwanda Premier League board, to participate in the 2025-2026 Rwanda Premier League Championship,” the statement reads.
The three Sudanese clubs joining the league are Al Merrikh SC, Al Hilal SC, and Al Ahli SC Wad Medani.
All three clubs qualified for CAF interclub competitions this season, with Al Merrikh SC being bounced in the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League by Saint-Éloi Lupopo, while Al-Ahli Wad Medani exited in the first preliminary round of the Confederations Cup by ES Sahel.
Al Hilal confirmed its place in the Champions League group stage on Friday with a 3-1 win over Kenya Police FC, giving the Sudanese club a 4-1 win on aggregate.
After the outbreak of civil war in Sudan in 2023, Al Merrikh and Al Hilal went into exile, playing outside of the country. The two sides participated in Mauritania’s Super D1 last season and are again set to join a foreign league in search of consistent competition in playable conditions.
FERWAFA explained the decision to add the three foreign clubs to its domestic league as part of its commitment to “Promoting regional integration, competitiveness and the global growth of football through stronger international collaboration”.
The federation ended its statement with “Football unites the world”.
