South African sides march on in Sunday CAF action

Three South African teams were among the 11 sides to punch their tickets for the CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup group stages on Sunday.


In the Champions League, MC Alger scraped past Colombe to reach the group stage, winning on away goals after a goalless draw on Sunday and a 1-1 draw in Cameroon in the first leg.


Simba SC held onto its first leg advantage against Nsingizini Hotspurs, playing out a goalless draw on Sunday to claim a 3-0 win on aggregate and march to the next round, while Stade Malien put Nouadhibou to bed with a 2-0 win after a 1-1 draw last weekend.


Mamelodi Sundowns eased through to the group stage with a 2-0 win over Remo Stars in the second leg after issuing a 5-1 battering in the first leg. They will be joined in the group stage by ES Tunis who defeated Rahimo 3-0, adding to the club’s 1-0 lead from the first leg.


In Sunday’s Confederations Cup action, Nairobi United narrowly edged ES Sahel 7-6 on penalties after ES Sahel scored twice in the match to pull level on aggregate.


AS Otohô d’Oyo and Djoliba both built on their 1-0 first leg leads, winning 2-0 and 2-1 against Ferroviário de Maputo and USFA respectively.


Al Masry took care of business at home, defeating Al-Ittihad 2-1 to advance following a 0-0 result last weekend.


After goalless first legs, South African sides Stellenbosch and Kaizer Chiefs both punched their tickets to the Confederations Cup group stage with Stellenbosch battering 15 de Agosto 4-1 and Chiefs winning 3-1 against AS Simba to advance to the competition’s group stage for the first time in club history.


Two spots remain in the Champions League group stage as reigning champions Pyramids must still play the second leg of their tie against Ethiopian Insurance, and RSB Berkane and Al Ahly Tripoli still await their second leg. Both fixtures are tied at 1-1 on aggregate.
