Bafana Bafana’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) squad, who competed in August, have not received their agreed-upon appearance fees from the South African Football Association (SAFA).

This is according to SABC Sport.

South Africa’s squad for the tournament – held in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania – contained 14 players who were unattached, and nearly made it out of the group stage. A heartbreaking comeback from Uganda saw the Cranes draw 3-3 with Bafana Bafana, who lost out on top spot in group C and fell behind Algeria on goal difference in their final game.

Bafana Bafana managed one win and three draws in its four games at the tournament.

The SABC’s research revealed that the payment amounts were agreed upon before the start of the tournament, however, none of the players have received what is owed to them yet.

According to the public broadcaster, attempts to reach SAFA chief executive officer Lydia Monyepao on the issue have gone unanswered.

“Several players, who requested anonymity for fear of reprisal, told SABC Sport they are led to understand that SAFA has already received the funds,” writes SABC Sport’s Mazola Molefe.

“Their attempts to secure updates or timelines for payment, however, have been met with silence, leaving them frustrated and uncertain about when the matter will be resolved,” says Molefe.
