The Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has announced a coaching change alongside its squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Head coach Marc Brys has been relieved of his duties following the re-election of footballing legend Samuel Eto’o as the country’s football federation President and the team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Cameroon finished as runners-up in group B of African qualifying behind Senegal, earning a spot in the continental play-offs as one of the best four second-placed teams. The nation fell to eventual play-off winners DR Congo in the semi-final.
Brys has been replaced by 56-year-old David Pagou who will be assisted by Martin Ntoungou Mpile.
The Indomitable Lions squad features two big omissions. Goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is on loan at Trabzonspor from Manchester United, has been left out alongside the experienced Vincent Aboubakar, who has 116 caps for the national team and was a member of Cameroon’s AFCON-winning side in 2017.
Including Aboubakar and Onana, nine of the players from the November window were not included in the nation’s AFCON squad.
Four players have been called-up for the first time, namely Edouard Sombang, Gerzino Nyamsi and Christian Kofane.
Premier League stars Bryan Mbeumo of Manchester United and Carlos Baleba of Brighton & Hove Albion will feature in the tournament.
The Indomitable Lions have been drawn in group F which, at first glance, appears to be the tournament’s group of death. The group also contains Gabon, who were also knocked out of the continent’s World Cup play-offs, current champions Ivory Coast and Mozambique.
