Orlando Pirates have confirmed that a deal has been finalised for the transfer of Mbekezeli Mbokazi to Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire.

The 20-year-old centre-back enjoyed a breakout season with the Buccaneers in 2024-25 after being promoted from their Diski team in October 2024, making 12 starts and one appearance as a substitute in the Betway Premiership.

Mbokazi was handed the captain’s armband for the new campaign and won his first trophy after helping Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side to a historic fourth consecutive MTN 8 title.

The Bafana Bafana international has started all but two of the Sea Robbers’ games in the league this term, coming off the bench in the 3-1 win over Golden Arrows and sitting out the 2-0 victory against Chippa United on November 25.

Mbokazi’s final outing for Pirates will be in the Carling Knockout final against Marumo Gallants on Saturday, although he will only link up with the Fire after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as he was included in Hugo Broos’ squad for the tournament in Morocco.

The youngster has signed a contract with the Eastern Conference outfit until the end of the 2029, but the club have an option to extend it for the duration of the 2029-20 season.

“We are excited to welcome Mbekezeli to the Club as we further strengthen our back line,” said Chicago Fire Director of Football and head coach Gregg Berhalter.

“In his young career, he has already shown high potential and proven himself to be a strong leader and competitor on the international level. We expect immediate impact and room to grow in future.”
