The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicks off later this month, and as anticipation builds across the continent, attention is turning to the standout players who could shape the tournament. Here are three footballers poised to play influential roles for their nations in Morocco.

Mohamed Amoura

Born: 9 May 2000, Jijel, Algeria

Position: Forward

Senior club career: ES Sétif (2020–2021); FC Lugano (2021–2023); Union Saint-Gilloise (2023–2025); VfL Wolfsburg (loan 2024–2025; permanent 2025– )

International debut: 8 October 2021, Algeria 6–1 Niger

Mohamed Amoura is expected to play a decisive role in Algeria’s frontline at AFCON 2025. Renowned for his blistering pace, sharp dribbling and excellent movement, he offers versatility across the attack—equally comfortable operating from the wing or drifting inside as a second striker. After strong performances in Europe and recent qualifiers, Amoura has emerged as a vital outlet in transition, capable of stretching defences and creating lanes for experienced figures like Riyad Mahrez. With his ability to score and provide assists, he stands out as one of Algeria’s most exciting potential difference-makers and could become one of the tournament’s breakout performers.

Steve Mounié

Born: 29 September 1994, Parakou, Benin

Position: Forward

Senior club career: Montpellier HSC (2014–2017); Nîmes Olympique (loan 2015–2016); Huddersfield Town (2017–2020); Stade Brest (2020–2024); FC Augsburg (2024– ); Alanyaspor (loan 2025– )

International debut: 13 October 2015, Congo 2–1 Benin

Steve Mounié will be central to Benin’s ambitions at AFCON 2025, both as captain and as their leading striker. At 31, his experience and physical presence remain invaluable. Known for his aerial dominance, hold-up play and ability to unsettle defenders, Mounié is expected to anchor Benin’s attack and provide a steady source of goals. His leadership will be equally important, especially with Benin facing a challenging group that includes Senegal, DR Congo and Botswana. His influence in key moments—on and off the pitch—could determine whether Benin can match or surpass their impressive 2019 quarterfinal run.

Patson Daka

Born: 9 October 1998, Chingola, Zambia

Position: Forward

Senior club career: Kafue Celtic (2014–2017); Nchanga Rangers (loan 2014–2015); Power Dynamos (loan 2015–2016); FC Liefering (2017–2018); RB Salzburg (2017–2021); Leicester City (2021– )

International debut: 13 June 2015, Zambia 0–0 Guinea-Bissau

Patson Daka is expected to lead Zambia’s attack as their primary goal threat at AFCON 2025. His record in qualifiers has reaffirmed his ability to finish consistently, and his pace, movement and link-up play make him pivotal to Zambia’s transitional game. Although injuries have disrupted parts of his build-up, he remains essential to the team’s structure—drawing defenders, creating space for teammates and providing a reliable focal point. If he enters the tournament in peak condition, Daka could play a decisive role in tight matches and significantly elevate Zambia’s attacking prospects.
