Mozambique head into the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a quiet but growing confidence, driven by a long-held ambition to reach the knockout rounds for the first time in their history. Under the guidance of experienced coach Chiquinho Conde, the Mambas have evolved steadily, transforming from outsiders into one of the continent’s most improved and intriguing teams.

This year marks their sixth AFCON appearance—and their second consecutive qualification after returning to the tournament in 2023. The objective for 2025 is clear and bolder than ever: progress beyond the group stage.

Drawn into a demanding Group F with defending champions Ivory Coast, four-time winners Cameroon and a rejuvenated Gabon, Mozambique know the challenge ahead is formidable. Every match will require focus, discipline and tactical maturity. Yet this is a team comfortable with being underestimated, and their recent form suggests they can stand toe-to-toe with Africa’s heavyweights.

Their qualification campaign showcased this shift. Mozambique finished second in their group behind Mali but ahead of Guinea-Bissau and Eswatini, suffering just one defeat. Throughout the campaign, they were defensively organised, composed in possession and purposeful in attack—qualities Conde has worked persistently to embed.

The squad’s balance is one of its greatest strengths. In defence, Edmilson Dove and Reinildo Mandava offer stability and width from full-back positions, while the experienced Mexer brings calm leadership at centre-back. In midfield, Manuel Kambala provides drive and authority, complemented by the creative influence of Witi and Gildo, both capable of unlocking compact defensive lines.

Up front, Stanley Ratifo’s intelligent movement and finishing supply a dependable goal threat. Meanwhile, Geny Catamo—one of Mozambique’s most promising exports in European football—adds speed, flair and match-changing potential. Versatile forward Clesio contributes cohesion and experience, linking the attack with maturity.

Their recent World Cup qualification campaign further highlights their progress. Mozambique finished third behind Algeria and Uganda, narrowly missing second place on goal difference. They pushed higher-ranked teams throughout, proving their rise is the result of genuine growth rather than fleeting momentum. That resilience will be vital in Morocco, where belief and composure often separate contenders from early exits.

Facing Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Gabon will test Mozambique’s development and resolve. The holders bring pedigree and star power, but Mozambique’s structure and pace could unsettle them. Cameroon’s physical, disciplined style will pose challenges, yet the Mambas thrive on opportunities to counter. Gabon, under new leadership, may well become Mozambique’s direct rivals for a spot in the round of 16.

For Mozambique, AFCON 2025 represents more than another appearance—it is a chance to reshape their footballing story and ignite belief across the nation. After decades of waiting for a breakthrough moment, the Mambas now have the tools and mindset to chase history.
