Bidvest Wits

Nickname:
The Clever Boys
Founded:
1921

Bidvest Wits have a strong history in South Africa’s top eight competition, but they will be outsiders to win the MTN8 in 2011.
The Clever Boys’ last triumph in the top eight came back in 1995 – it was their second top eight title (having first won it in 1984) from five appearances in the final.
In recent years the Johannesburg team have not been regulars in the top eight. Since reaching the semifinals in 2004 (when it was still the SAA Supa8), they have appeared just once in the competition: 2009 when they were sent packing in the quarterfinals by Kaizer Chiefs.
Last season, Roger de Sa’s team punched above their weight to end in a very respectable sixth place on the log and impressed with their exuberant style of play. However, they have lost several key players, including goalkeeper Darren Keet to an overseas move and influential centre-back Tefu Mashamaite to Chiefs.
As ever, the Clever Boys will be relying on their productive youth system to bolster their squad ahead of the 2011/12 season and they have also made some canny ‘senior’ acquisitions such as Emille Baron, Bradley Ritson and Ntokozo Sikhakhane who add depth to crucial positions.
