Al Hilal Al Sudany Club for Physical Education are returning to the group phase of the African Champions League after missing out in 2010, having been fairly regular competitors at this stage over the last few years.
Al Hilal were runners-up in 1987 and 1992 in the final of the old format African Champions Cup, losing to Al Ahly of Egypt and Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca respectively. In the new format of the competition, introduced in 1997, Al Hilal first qualified for the 2007 Champions League.
The club usurped defending champions Al Ahly to finish top of their group standings and were narrowly beaten in the semifinals of the competition by eventual winners Etoile Sahel of Tunisia.
In 2008, Al Hilal finished bottom of their group standings but were always in the running until the last round of group matches. In 2009, the club reached the semifinals, but were easily brushed aside 7-2 on aggregate by eventual champions TP Mazembe.
Al Hilal hold the distinction of being one of only two clubs to have beaten Al Ahly at their home ground in Cairo in African club competition. It was a feat achieved in 2004 when Al Hilal eliminated the Egyptian champions from the competition but then failed in the next round to make it to the group phase.
Al Hilal was founded by students from Gordon Memorial College in 1930 and have won 26 Sudan league titles and five Sudan Cups since. They were also runners up in the Arab Champions Cup in 2003.
They are currently coached by the Serbian Milutin Sredojević.
