Bloemfontein Celtic

Nickname:
Phunya Sele Sele
Founded:
1969

They hadn’t won a trophy since 1985 so lifting the 2005 top 8 trophy was celebrated with much passion by everyone in Bloemfontein.
That was an early sign that Siwelele were serious contenders again and their progress has been steady. Last season’s fifth-placed League finish was remarkable given that it was Clinton Larsen’s first season as a head coach.
But the former League winner with Manning Rangers and Orlando Pirates got the best out of a youthful squad and is hoping to inspire his players to go a step further and challenge for a trophy.
They have a tricky MTN8 clash against Mamelodi Sundowns first up though, so last season’s defensive skills will need to be repeated.
Celtic conceded the third least goals of any top-flight team and much of the praise went to towering centre back Erick Mathoho.
He’ll play a key role once again and so will Larsen, who will need to watch out for second season blues, which often happens to young teams and coaches after a decent showing.
Larsen, though, has signed striker Lennox Bacela outright from Santos and has added Lethola Mofokeng. He’s hoping to sign a foreign striker too as Celtic look to solidify.
