Platinum Stars were formed into the club they are today when Joseph 'Tycoon' Mapfulagasha changed the name of the Second Division club he owned, Khakhu Fast XI, into Mapate Silver Stars in 1998.
The club changed their name thick and fast in the early days, becoming Tycoon Silver Stars and then HP Silver Stars. They switched to Platinum Stars in 2008 when the Royal Bafokeng Nation bought the club. They moved up through the tiers of South Maize Cup under Owen da Gama, before winning promotion to the Premiership in the 2002/03 season.
Initially, their offices were based in Johannesburg, but the club has since relocated to Rustenburg in the North West province in January 2011, and play their home games at either the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, a 2010 FIFA World Cup venue, or the nearby Moruleng Stadium. The club's nickname is 'Dikwena' (The Crocodiles).
Stars' first major cup triumph came in 2006 when they won the Telkom Knockout, with striker Hareaipha Marumo scoring a hat-trick in the 3-1 victory over Ajax Cape Town. They have since won that trophy again and the MTN8, both in 2013. Their best League finish is second, achieved in the 2006/07 and 2012/13 seasons.
The club's record win since their elevation to the PSL is 5-0, achieved against Dolphins FC in the Nedbank Cup in 2012. Their biggest defeat was a 6-0 loss at the hands of Lamontville Golden Arrows in the 2008/09 campaign.
In the 2014/15 season Stars were not at their best and failed to pick-up any silverware after being knocked out of all the cup tournaments and finishing in a disappointing 11th place.
