Free State Stars endured a difficult 2016/17 campaign in which they barely avoided the threat of relegation, finishing third-last on the Absa Premiership log (and only on goal difference ahead of Baroka, who had to fight for their top flight status in the playoffs).

In the cup competitions they performed respectably, reaching the semifinals of the Telkom Knockout and the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup.

Nonetheless, their poor league form cost coach Serame Letsoaka his job in June 2017, with the club appointing former University of Pretoria and Stellenbosch FC boss Sammy Troughton as his replacement in early July. He in turn lasted just two games before being replaced by Luc Eymael.

Ea Lla Koto have struggled to get out of a downward spiral in recent seasons and desperately need to raise their level of performance if they are to avoid another campaign haunted by the threat of relegation.

The club management have taken steps by ridding themselves of several dead-wood players to open up space for youngsters and new recruits. Whether this will see them climb up the log remains to be seen.
