Free State Stars

Nickname:
Ea Lla Koto
Founded:
1977

Free State Stars have probably overachieved for the size of the club in recent years having been regular finishers in the top eight.
They are brilliantly led by coach Steve Komphela, one of the finest tacticians in the PSL and a man who appears able to lift his players beyond all expectations.
Originally formed in 1977, the team was first known as Makwane Computer Stars, before becoming Fairways Stars and then QwaQwa Stars.
They won the Coca-Cola Cup in 1994 and the same year lost in the final of the Bob Save Super Bowl (now the Nedbank Cup) to Vaal Professionals.
They were also regular competitors in the top flight of South African football before the sale of the franchise in 2002.
The following year owner Mike Mokoena bought the franchise of First Division Maholosiane FC and renamed the club Free State Stars.
They were promoted to the Premiership in at the end of the 2004/05 season, but went straight back down, before coming up again in 2006/07.
Last season Stars reached the semifinals of the Telkom Knockout, but they were defeated by provincial rivals and eventual champions Bloemfontein Celtic.
