The Republic of Ireland will be making their second appearance at the tournament with their only previous one coming in 1988.
The Boys in Green won just one match during that tournament, which was hosted by Germany, before crashing out in the group stage.
They will be led by the experienced coach Giovanni Trapattoni who took over in 2008 after enjoying a lot of success at club level.
Trapattoni has already won some silverware with the Irish side, leading them to victory during the inaugural Nations Cup which was launched in 2011, beating Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Ireland have an experienced squad with a number of players in their late twenties and thirties, and the more experienced campaigners such as Shay Given, John OShea, Damien Duff and Robbie Keane are expected to form the spine of the team.
The Republic of Ireland finished as runners-up in Group B, losing just once against eventual group winners Russia, and qualified for the finals after defeating Estonia in the playoffs.
They will go into this tournament as underdogs, being one of the least experienced sides when it comes to the European Championship history.
They have been drawn in Group C against defending champions Spain, Croatia and Trapattonis native country, Italy.
