Much was expected of 2006 World Cup finalists Angola as they entered the finals of the 2008 Nations Cup, but the side flattered to deceive, despite making it out of Group D and into the quarterfinals.
The one player who did emerge with a hugely enhanced reputation was striker Manucho, who would go on to sign for English Premiership giants Manchester United.
The Angolans started with a fortunate 1-1 draw with South Africa and having taken the lead midway through the first half, they were forced to endure huge pressure and finally succumbed to a stunning equaliser from Elrio van Heerden for Bafana Bafana.
They followed that up with a more impressive 3-1 success over Senegal, Manucho coring another two and Flavio the third.
The result meant that both they and Tunisia needed just a draw in their final pool match to advance to the semifinals, and the teams played out to a 0-0 stalemate to ensure their passage.
They lost 2-1 to Egypt in the Last 8, with Manucho scoring for Palancas Negras, and their progress since this tournament has taken a definite backwards step.
