Burkina Faso are looking to book a first ever World Cup finals place and a first appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations since 2004.

The Stallions reached their first continental finals in 1978 as Upper Volta, but did not progress past the first round.

They had to wait another 18 years for their next showing, in 1996, and were regular qualifiers up until 2006 when they failed to book a place in Egypt.

Their best finish was fourth-place achieved in 1998 when they hosted the event, losing 2-0 to eventual champions Egypt in the semifinals.

The current side is coached by Portuguese national Paulo Duarte, who played for the lies of Boavista and Maritimo in his homeland, but is in his first job as an international coach.

He recently also signed on as coach of French Ligue 1 side Le Mans, but will continue in his role with Burkina Faso until March 31, 2010.

Strikers Moumouni Dagano, who plays for Al-Khor in Qatar, and Yssouf Koné of Romanian upstarts CFR Cluj, are the dangermen up front, while Charles Kaboré of Olympique Marseille and Jonathan Pitroipa from Hamburg are key players in midfield.

They breezed through the previous round of qualifying with five wins and a draw, beating off the challenge of Tunisia, Burundi and Seychelles to top their group.
