Burkina Faso football has been on the rise of late, a final appearance at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and qualification for the final round of matches on the road to the Brazil World Cup.

But this will be a very different selection devoid of their overseas stars who bring most of the top talent to the senior national side.

They are competing in their first CHAN finals after having beaten Niger to qualify for the event.

Only one player – goalkeeper Laré Mohamed Diarra – is based in the Burkina Faso league from the squad that was called up for their final World Cup pool phase qualifier in September, showing just what a task coach Paul Put has to put together a totally new team.

Burkina Faso have done well to reach the finals of other continental tournaments, they have missed just to Nations Cup since 1996, though their final showing in South Africa in February was a rare bit of success there as they have largely faltered in the first round.
Tournament Review:
The Burkina Faso team was one of the most disappointing at the 2014 CHAN tournament after they failed to register a single win. Coach Brama Traore’s team managed to score two goals, but conceded four.

They fell 2-1 to underdogs Uganda Cranes, drew 1-1 with the Atlas Lions Morocco before going down 1-0 to the hard fighting Zimbabwe team.
Although Traore blamed his team’s failure to a lack of enough time to prepare for the competition, they were also tactically lacking as they preferred to score late goals and play better football in the last quarter periods of their matches.

Furthermore, the fact that Burkina Faso were the best ranked team in Group B but  finished last after three matches is cause for alarm.

However on a promising note, the technical team will be happy that young players like Eric Traore and defender Issoufou Dayo put up good displays that could earn them better prospects abroad.
