Denmark have been to three previous World Cup tournaments, the first being in Mexico in 1986 when they reached the second round. They topped their pool that also included West Germany, Uruguay and Scotland, but were humbled 5-1 by Spain in the Round of 16.
Their next appearance came in 1998 in France when they went one step further to the quarterfinals. This time they were pooled with eventual champions France, South Africa and Saudi Arabia, and finished second, before ousting Nigeria 4-1 in the Round of 16. They were then unlucky to lose 3-2 to Brazil in the quarters.
Four years later they were back at the showpiece event, this time in Japan and South Korea, and for the third-time running made it past the group stages. There some familiar names in the pool in France, Uruguay and Senegal, but the Danes coasted home as group leaders. They lost 3-0 to England in the Round of 16 however.
