Portugal will entertain fans because of their attacking style but the presence of the Netherlands and Germany in their group will make it tough for them to reach the knockout phase.
The Dutch have been in blistering form over the past few years and reached the final of the 2010 World Cup while Germany have a particularly strong pedigree in the European Championship.
Portugal coach Paulo Bento's side should be able to deal with their other Group B opponents Denmark comfortably, which means they must play above themselves to be able to advance.
Bento, who took over their floundering qualifying campaign in September 2010, revived the side and got off to the perfect start by beating eventual Group H winners Denmark 3-1.
They scored 21 goals in their eight match qualifiers, before smashing another six past Bosnia in the play-offs.
Portugal will be relying on their captain Cristiano Ronaldo to upset the group favourites and even go beyond the group phase. With 88 caps, the Real Madrid star man has been in blistering form for the Spanish club, reaching 100 La Liga goals in just three seasons and averaging more than a goal a game.
He will be a threat to all their opponents while the likes of Nani and Helder Postiga bring more attacking flair. Portugals main weakness could be in defence.
