Kaizer Chiefs

Nickname:
Amakhosi
Founded:
1970

As South Africa’s undisputed ‘cup kings’, Kaizer Chiefs are always amongst the favourites to win the top eight cup.

And the fact that they are the defending champions means that Amakhosi can enter the 2009 MTN8 with genuine confidence of retaining the sought-after trophy.
The Soweto Glamour Boys ended third on last season’s PSL table, a marked improvement from the two previous season, but it still wasn’t enough to save coach Muhsin Ertugral from the axe, with Serbian Vladimir Vermezovic the latest man to take up the hot seat.
‘Vlad V’, as the media have dubbed him, has started off well in preseason tournaments but the real test will come when Chiefs step up to play their first MTN8 match.
Amakhosi won the title by defeating Mamelodi Sundowns on penalties last year. It was their 14th top eight triumph, which is twice as many as the competition’s next most successful side, Orlando Pirates.

3rd
