Kaizer Chiefs qualified for the 2014 version of the MTN8 by finishing second in the 2013/14 Absa Premiership standings, two points behind eventual winners Mamelodi Sudnowns.
The Amakhosi fell at the semifinals of last year’s MTN8 competition after losing 2-1 on aggregate, over two legs, to Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates. Chiefs, though, started the competition in fine fashion after beating the University of Pretoria 3-0 in the quarterfinals thanks to goals from Tefu Mashamaite, Erick Mathoho and Siphiwe Tshabalala. In the first leg semifinal the Amakhosi lost 1-0 to Pirates before earning a 1-1 draw in the return leg, which saw them exit the tournament 2-1 on aggregate.
In the 2014 edition of the MTN8 Chiefs will be looking to do better and hopefully lift the MTN8 trophy, a feat they last achieved in 2008.
Coach Stuart Baxter has largely kept the same squad from last year. The changes see Siphelele Mthembu (from Platinum Stars) and Levy Mokogothu (from Moroka Swallows) join the Amakhosi. Zitha Macheke (defender), Hendrick Ekstein and Zwivhuya Chris Matombo (both midfielders) have been promoted from the Kaizer Chiefs Development. Only two players have left the club in the form of Lucky Baloyi and Philani Cele, both on loan to Moroka Swallows while Jimmy Jambo has retired.
