The club was founded in 1958 by Ali Benaouda and Ali Layass, and were originally known as USM Sétif. The name was changed to EPS in 1960, and in 1977 it became known as Entente Sportive de Sétif, a moniker it still carries today.
Regarded as one of the leading Algerian clubs, they have been forced to live in the shadow of rivals JS Kabylie over the years, but can point to league success in 2007 and 2009, as well as the Algerian Cup in 2010.
They are the only club in Africa to have won the African Cup of Champions (now Champions League) while not being in the top-flight of their domestic League, something they achieved in 1988 when they beat Nigerian side Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland) in the final.
They were the runners-up in the CAF Confederation Cup in 2009, losing to Stade Malien in the final, and have reached the group stages of the Champions League for the first time since the competition changed format.
