The defending champions, currently ranked a extremely impressive ninth on the FIFA rankings list, will be desperate to reassert their authority on African football after they were excluded from the 2010 World Cup, having failed to qualify at the expense of Algeria.
The seven-time AFCON champions will be firm favourites to win Group G, and indeed the tournament proper.
The north African side, winner of the last three tournaments, is packed with talent. Inspirational captain Ahmed Hassan, centre back Wael Gomaa and goal keeper Essam El-Hadary bring a wealth of experience and provide a solid core to the team.
The likes of Mohamed Aboutrika, Geddo, Mohamed Zidan, Mido and Amr Zaki give the team outstanding options in attack, while striker Emad Moteab has a goal ratio of around a goal every second game at international level.
In addition, coach Hassan Shehata is highly respected and vastly experienced coach, who abides firmly by his Muslim faith, further adding to his stature. He knows just how to get the best out of his players and is not afraid to make difficult decisions, having dropped big-name players in the past when he felt necessary.
Egypt perfectly combine African flair and skill with European tactical discipline and will have only themselves to blame if they do not qualify from Group G with considerable ease.
