Gabon will be making their second appearance at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in the 2014 tournament in South Africa.

They lost out in the group stage of the 2011 competition in Sudan.

The Panthers fell 1-0 to hosts Sudan in their opening group game, before they forced Algeria to a 2-2 draw.

They then beat Uganda 2-1 in their final group game courtesy of a Pitty Djoue brace to finish on four points, a point behind second-placed Algeria.

For the 2014 CHAN, they eliminated mighty Cameroon 7-6 on penalties after aggregate scores stood at 1-1.

Gabonese midfielder Samson Mbingui scored the only goal of the match in which Cameroon were missing several top stars from Cotonsport, who were engaged in a CAF Champions League clash.
Tournament Review:
Gabon’s 2014 African Nations Championship campaign ended in heartbreak in the quarterfinals, as they were eliminated on penalties by Libya.
The Panthers topped Group D at the tournament after a goalless draw with Burundi and wins over DR Congo (1-0) and Mauritania (4-2), leading them into the last eight with some impressive momentum.
However, they were unable to overcome a resilient Libya, who held the West Africans to a 1-1 draw in Polokwane (former Lens, Rangers and Hull City striker Daniel Cousin scored Gabon’s goal) before controlling their nerves better in the subsequent penalty shootout to win 4-2.
Despite the elimination, Gabon can still reflect on the 2014 CHAN as an improvement on their group stage elimination on debut in Sudan three years ago.
They will now target the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with greater confidence.
